Faculty of Science

Because it offers students a chance to explore many different disciplines in the sciences, a Bachelor of Science degree is the essential starting point for a broad range of careers. The Faculty of Science at CUSB focuses on providing a solid foundation in the basic sciences, allowing students to pursue their goals upon graduation.

The Faculty offers a three-year General Bachelor of Science degree and a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with a joint-major in Microbiology and Biochemistry.

Biochemistry
Biochemistry examines the underlying principles that govern the formation and propagation of life. It therefore seeks to unlock the secrets of the building blocks of life, DNA, and other biomolecules that play an important role in living organisms such as vitamins, hormones and enzymes.
Careers Options: biotechnology, biomedical analysis and research, forensic medicine, research for industry or government, medicine, education.
Chemistry
A discipline integral to many careers, the study of chemistry will teach you to identify and analyze the molecular properties and structures of the substances that form matter.
Career Options: pharmacy, medicine, environmental management, research for industry or government, mining, agriculture, education.
Computer Science
This discipline provides an understanding of the underlying principles governing microprocessors and computer systems, and allows you to develop proficiency in a variety of computer languages.
Career Options: computer systems design and programming, software development, network systems management, computer consulting, computer services.
Mathematics and Statistics
Whether dealing with tomorrow’s weather, the handling of an aircraft, finding the gene for cancer, econometrics, business administration or chemistry, mathematics remains the indispensable training for disciplined thinking, logic and precision. It develops the imagination and intuition; it is an international language and an important aspect of general culture. Through interaction with other sciences, it plays an increasingly important role in designing the objects of everyday life.
Career Options: aeronautics, robotics, guidance systems, computer systems design, space research, medicine, actuarial science, scientific research, education, accounting, risk analysis.
Microbiology
Through the study of microscopic living organisms, microbiology provides us with a greater understanding of micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Career Options: medicine, research for industry, education, agriculture, medical microbiology, bacteriology, virology.
Physics
An understanding of physics gives a better appreciation of the relationship between matter and energy, and allows you to explore in greater depth the fundamental laws of nature.
Career Options: engineering, education, aerospace physics, biophysics, geophysics, astrophysics, climatology, medicine, research for industry or government.
Zoology
Zoology studies all living organisms, from the simplest single-celled organisms to highly evolved mammals. It deals with the anatomy, cellular structure, evolutionary history and natural habitats of animals.
Career Options: veterinary science, medicine, natural resource management, environmental science, research for industry or government.
