Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts offers a three-year General Bachelor of Arts degree across many disciplines, a four-year Honours degree in either French or Translation, plus a one-year Certificate program in Translation. It also offers a Master’s program in Canadian Studies.

Humanities and Social Sciences

The Humanities and Social Sciences encompass a variety of disciplines, each of which provides a unique approach to understanding the human species through its history, development, organization, challenges and potential.

Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of the human race from cultural, social and biological perspectives. The Anthropology program at CUSB devotes special attention to the culture and ethnology of the aboriginal peoples of North America.

Canadian Studies
The study of Canada fosters a thorough appreciation of the Canadian experience in all its diversity. This interdisciplinary program offers students a deeper, multidimensional understanding of Canada and its many regions.

Economics
Economics is the study of economic systems, structures and mechanisms as they apply to a broad range of human endeavours at the personal, community, regional, national, and international levels.

Geography
In its broadest sense, geography studies the relationship between people and their surroundings. At CUSB, special emphasis is placed on the geography of Canada, developing countries and the French-speaking world.
Career Options: geography, geology, cartography, urban or regional planning, resource development, industrial location and monitoring, market research, environmental planning.
History
History seeks to develop insight into the human condition through the study of past human experience. History courses at CUSB focus mainly on the economic, social and cultural history of Europe and the Americas.

Philosophy
Philosophy is an inquiry into the fundamental issues governing the nature of human existence. Studying philosophy will help you to develop a more disciplined mind, one that enables you to express thoughts clearly and defend ideas effectively.

Political Science
Political Science examines the social and political behaviours of individuals, groups and countries, and evaluates that behaviour in light of objectives and situational constraints.

Psychology
Psychology is the study of the functions of the brain and the role it plays in shaping personality, as well as individual and group behaviour.

Religious Studies
Religious Studies provides a comprehensive study of religious belief and experience as it applies within and across cultural boundaries.

Sociology
Sociology is the study of the behaviour of human beings within groups and societies, and the forces that affect that behaviour.
Career Options: social work, law, health, public administration, journalism, urban planning, labour relations, unionism.

Language and Literature

Learning a language not only involves systematic training in reading, writing and understanding the language itself, it also involves an in-depth study of the literature, history and cultures pertaining to that language.

English
CUSB offers a variety of English courses in British, American and Canadian literatures, as well as in essay writing. English as an additional language courses are also offered at a variety of levels.
French
CUSB provides students studying French the opportunity to attain a high level of proficiency in the language, and in-depth understanding of various French cultures and literatures.
German
CUSB offers German courses at the introductory and intermediate levels as well as courses in commercial German, which can be very practical in international business or foreign affairs.
Spanish
CUSB offers Spanish at the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as courses in commercial Spanish, and in Latin-American literature and culture.
